United Nations chief calls for more attention to mental health

They point out that mental health issues garner just 1% of global aide despite costing "the world $2.5tn a year, a figure that is expected to balloon to $6tn by 2030 unless we take action".

Research by Vets4Pets has revealed that almost a third (30%) of pet owners in the United Kingdom got their pet to help improve their mental wellbeing.

City based psychologists from the city said they see more number of young girls and women seeking treatment for mental health.

More than a fifth (22%) of employees went into work when feeling mentally unwell past year, according to research by Canada Life Group Insurance.

Parents who wake their children up early in order to beat traffic and get to school early may be exposing the children to mental illness, the acting Director of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Dr Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, has warned.

"In my time as health minister I have met many people who have been bereaved by suicide, and their stories of pain and loss will stay with me for a long time", she said.

The project is being organised by a group of 12 people - the majority of whom are under 30 and have experienced mental illness.

"Sadly, mental illness is taboo in many Chinese families and they feel ashamed to even talk about it", she said.

"But one of the questions it will have to ask, is why so many previous inquiries and reports into mental health have failed to provide us with durable solutions to the problems we now face".

"We would be naive to think that the youth and young adults of The Bahamas are immune to risks and effects of mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders".

According to World Health Organization, a lot of these cases go undetected and therefore untreated, meaning that they're likely to get worse as a person gets older.

Around 4,500 people take their own lives each year in England and suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 45. "This initiative is crucial in getting people the help they need early, enough to prevent the situation from getting worse and enabling them to recover well".

The harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents were also identified as contributing to risky behaviours such as violence, unsafe sex and dangerous driving.
