Volvo and NVIDIA expand AV collaboration

Volvo Cars, the Geely-owned Swedish auto maker, and Nvidia, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) computing firm, are joining forces for the development of a highly advanced, AI-capable core computer for the next generation of Volvo cars. For them, it means that it's not quite at the Level 3 handoff stage between vehicle and human, but it outperforms any other Level 2-like driver assist package out there right now.

Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. What Volvo did was upgrade the SPA 2 so that it keeps everything that is useful and at the same time get all the next-gen technologies that Volvo has to offer right now. Today, Volvo already offers level 2 capability, implying the vehicle is equipped with semi-autonomous driver assistance systems that can steer and brake the auto as long as the driver remains in full control.

Volvo Cars will use US -based chipmaker Nvidia's high-powered Drive AGX Xavier technology in its next-generation cars to help make those models capable of up to Level 4 autonomous driving, the companies announced Wednesday. "Your vehicle will drive you and constantly watch out for you", explained Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.

"As a world-leader in safety technology and innovation, Volvo understands there is a direct connection between safety, comfort, and the computing capability inside the vehicle", said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. Earlier NVIDIA said that its software is capable of tracking movement of the head and eyes of the driver. Volvo announced this morning that it will be adopting NVIDIA's DRIVE AGX Xavier platform for its future self-driving vehicles. Veoneer is a spinoff of Swedish supplier Autoliv's active safety business and Zenuity is an automotive software joint venture controlled by Volvo and Autoliv.

Certain statements in this press release including, but not limited to, statements as to: the benefits and impact of DRIVE AGX Xavier and NVIDIA's collaboration with Volvo; and the impact and requirements of autopilot and a successful launch of autonomous drive are forward-looking statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause results to be materially different than expectations.
