Young people 'turning their backs on booze - with nearly a third teetotal'

This was driven by a larger proportion of young people not taking up drinking alcohol at all, which has nearly doubled over the same period (9% to 17%).

"That the increase in non-drinking was found across many different groups suggests that non-drinking may becoming more mainstream among young people which could be caused by cultural factors".

The study says it is hard to pinpoint a single factor for the decline in alcohol consumption.

A large proportion of young people in England are shunning alcohol completely, a study has suggested.

Young people are increasingly turning their backs on booze - with nearly a third teetotal, according to a shock new study.

"More research needs to be carried out to investigate this further, whether the drivers could also explain declines in other risky behaviors we are witnessing among young people", she added.

The data revealed that 29% of 16-24-year-olds in the United Kingdom don't drink alcohol - a significant increase from 18% back in 2005.

But the increased rates of non-drinking were not observed among smokers, ethnic minorities and those with poor mental health, according to the study, which analysed data on nearly 10,000 young people.

However, our study found that non-drinking was not increasing among these groups but rather across a wide spectrum including, among the white population, north and south regions, students, those in employment and across higher and lower social classes.

A new study has found that more young adults in England, aged between 16 and 24 are turning away from alcohol consumption and this has made the current generation one of the most sober in recent times. There has also been a reduction in the numbers drinking above recommended limits and binge drinking; over one in four had binge drank in the past week in 2005 compared with fewer than one in five in 2015.

"Both trends are to be welcomed from a public-health standpoint and should be capitalized on going forward".

They analysed the proportion of non-drinkers among social demographic and health sub-groups, along with alcohol units consumed by those that did drink and levels of binge drinking.
