Adobe Unveils Photoshop for iPad, Launching in 2019

With Creative Cloud's automatic syncing of all files, you should be able to pick up editing on any device at any time without needing to do a thing.

Adobe did not announce a date, but iPad users can sign up here for updates.

Adobe is also launching a new video editing app for YouTubers and social media users, dubbed Premier Rush CC. But an entirely new system of expanding, docking, and rearranging tool panes makes Photoshop actually usable on mobile in a way that it hasn't been before in other implementations that simply introduced a touch interface to the current desktop version of Photoshop CC. This marks the first time the software will be available off the desktop in a full-fledged and purely touch-optimized package since Adobe originally released Photoshop 1.0 almost three decades ago. Instead, there have been lightweight versions like Photoshop Express, or apps that focus on specific Photoshop features, like retouching. The app will support file providers like iCloud Drive, Dropbox, and more. Adobe Stock is also integrated into Rush, so you'll have access to a constant stream of new, free Motion Graphics templates.

On stage at MAX 2018, Adobe executives demoed two new Adobe projects for the iPad called Photoshop CC and Project Gemini.

When manual importing or exporting does make sense to your workflow, those options will still be available in Photoshop for iPad.

Adobe is utilizing its established Creative Cloud subscription for pricing.

The long-held notion that the iPad could not be considered a productivity device until it was able to run actual programs and not just scaled down app experiences, was largely held in place by the omission of Adobe's feature-heavy creative suite, until now. For example, the color correction is powered by Premiere Pro.

Premiere Rush CC is available now on Windows and macOS and via the iOS App Store.

Adobe is using this year's Adobe MAX conference to launch a series of updates that capitalize on a number of themes, such as the greater role of AI, machine learning and voice recognition for creatives, as well as the increasing importance of touch devices in creativity. Director Ron Howard, photographer Albert Watson and The Roots drummer Questlove are all due to speak at the event, which is running until Wednesday.
