Unvaccinated Child Is First Death of Flu Season

The child, whose age and hometown has not been disclosed, died between September 30 and October 6 of influenza B, ABC reports.

The department's report did not say where in the state that the death occurred, but did say the unvaccinated child was otherwise healthy before getting sick.

"This year's flu vaccine has been reformulated and updated based on last year's historically bad flu season", Webby said.

A new survey on parents' attitude toward the flu vaccine may shed light on why some continue to resist the flu shot, even though it could put their children in danger.

As we head into the heart of flu season, Dr. Mallika Marshall provides the facts you need to know to keep you and your family safe. More than two-thirds of the 183 children who died around the country from the flu a year ago were also unvaccinated. "Although not ideal, the flu shot is a valuable and life-saving public health tool".

Neither outbreak caused the reported death, Hillsborough County Office of Public Health Preparedness spokesman Kevin Watler confirmed.

A third of parents believe that the flu vaccine doesn't work. It is not a conspiracy for doctors to recommend the flu vaccine. Plus, a child in Florida has already died from the flu. Parents can opt for the nasal mist this year, and even if the flu vaccine is not a ideal match for the strain, health officials say it decreases symptoms and severity.

Flu activity remains low across the state, according to the health department, but it's expected to pick up in the coming weeks.

The government will launch its annual free flu vaccination program on Monday at hospitals and other medical facilities throughout Taiwan, starting with people in high-risk groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
