Wildlife officer shot family of baboons to impress his wife

Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner Blake Fischer poses with

An Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner, Blake Fischer, and his wife have been slammed for posting photos with the 14 types of animals they've killed.

Instead, several former Fish and Game commissioners are pushing for his resignation - with a photo of a "family of baboons" that Fischer shot with a recurve bow prompting most of the outrage.

The grizzly photos show the Idaho man posing with an assortment of slain animals, including a giraffe, leopard, impala, sable antelope, waterbuck, kudu, warthog, gemsbok (oryx) and eland.

Fischer was criticized by former commissioners for sending the photos to them and others in a September 17 email.

In the email Mr Fischer joked that his wife wanted "to get a feel of Africa, so I shot a whole family of baboons".

Former Fish and Game Commissioner Fred Trevey told Fischer in an email that he should resign "to shield the commission as an institution and hunting as a legitimate tool of wildlife management from the harm that is sure to come", according to The Statesman. "What bothers me is he's got the family there and a little baby baboon sitting there with blood all over it, kind of like in the mother's arms", Alder said.

"It would be the same as going out and killing fawns", he said, adding: "I thought, 'Why in the world would anybody want to kill a family of baboons?' It just made no sense at all".

"I have high expectations and standards for every appointee in state government", said Governor Otter.

Keith E. Carlson, another former commissioner who called for Fischer to resign, echoed a similar condemnation of the photo.

Fischer submitted his letter of resignation to the governor, C.L. "I didn't do anything immoral".

The governor's office has launched an investigation, and the photo has caused some to question Fischer's judgment.

One of the more controversial photos included "a family of baboons" he reportedly killed. Alder is the executive director of the pro-hunting group Idaho for Wildlife. "Commissioner Fischer did not", Otter said in a statement. You just don't do that.

The Idaho Game and Fishing Commission has seven members, who are subject to appointment by Governor Otter, and further confirmation by the national Senate.

In a lengthy email, Fred Trevey, who served as a commissioner for eight years, advised Fischer to "take responsibility and resign, sooner rather than later", the KBOI reported.

Fischer, whose appointment was set to expire in 2022, also runs an agricultural and irrigation supply company in Boise and manufactures specialty archery equipment, according to his commission profile.
