Legal marijuana officially on sale in Ontario

By his estimate there are hundreds of thousands of Canadians that carry personal possession charges for marijuana.

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada just hours away, the federal government is expected to announce it will pardon people with past convictions for cannabis possession as the new law takes effect.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh went further Tuesday, calling on the Liberals "to immediately delete" the criminal records held by thousands of Canadians for simple cannabis possession.

Rather, it will streamline the existing process of obtaining a record suspension. The vast majority of drug cases are handled by federal prosecutors, who could decide, in the public interest, not to prosecute, they said.

Canada is now the largest country with a legal national marijuana marketplace as sales began early Wednesday in Newfoundland.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of Wednesday's announcement.

As one official put it, they don't expect the questions to end and foresee bumps along the road after legalization.

Speaking to the Ontario Provincial Police Association, in The Blue Mountains, Ford said while Trudeau "boasted" about legalizing cannabis in the past, the prime minister has been a "no show" as October 17th approaches.

"Three years later, the federal government still can not give our police a single reliable piece of equipment to test for drug-impaired driving". The goal is to better reflect society's changing opinion about marijuana and bring black market operators into a regulated system.

That means provinces and territories will determine where it is sold, where stores operate and are located, along with the limits for possession, the minimum age required for purchase and consumption, restrictions on public use and additional requirements and prohibitions for growing pot at home.

"There's no money in the product itself", she said.

Health Canada is working on developing regulations on edibles within a year, Blair said, adding he would caution consumers about their use.
