Apple teams up with Zimmer Biomet to support postoperative recovery

Apple Watch to be part of new clinical study

As per the CEO of Zimmer Biomet, the company is excited to team up with Apple in transforming the experience of patients and surgeons during, before and after knee and hip replacements.

Every year, doctors perform over a million knee and hip replacements in the US. The app associated with the study will be available for these participants only, however, once the study concludes successful, Apple would roll out the app and the associated tools for all the Apple Watch users.

Apple has been steadily adding health features to its eponymous watch.

Researchers will marry this data and patient-reported feedback with the activity and health data collected by the Apple Watch to determine the effect of the technology on improving patient outcomes and cutting down on costs.

The only patients who could use the app, for now, are those who are enrolled in this study.

The Apple Watch-the titan of the smartwatch industry with more than 18 million devices sold in 2017 alone-is about to connect thousands of hip and knee surgery patients directly with their surgeons. The mymobility app will also help doctors track the health of patients who choose to stay at home after their surgery rather than going to health care centers.

Zimmer Biomet partnered with Apple to launch a mobile app that will connect knee and hip replacement patients to surgical teams and follow them through the episode of care. Both companies are also cooperating on a clinical study.

"We believe one of the best ways to empower consumers is by giving them the ability to use their health and activity information to improve their own care", said Jeff Williams, Chief Operating Officer at Apple, in a statement.

Patients will be able to access the app, now in production, through the Apple Watch or iPhone. By contributing to a related study, Apple is getting involved in one of the biggest and fastest-growing segments of medicine. This can then be used to provide physicians with a picture of how patients are recovering. According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, at least 30 million people in the USA have some kind of eating disorder, and one hope is the new study reliant on Apple Watch could help researchers predict an episode of binge-eating before it happens.

This is not the first time the Apple Watch's health features have made it part of a study.
