Find out if you were affected by the Facebook hack

Facebook How to check

In a statement, Facebook disclosed that hackers accessed the usernames, contact details and other information from accounts of up to 14 million people.

Facebook will follow-up with customized email messages to the 30 million users who were affected to explain what information the hackers may have stolen and with tips as to how people can protect themselves from suspicious emails, texts and phone calls.

In addition to sharing an update about the breach last week, recounting the entire series of events from the time the bugs were discovered to the investigation that followed, Facebook also debuted a new feature that allows everyone with a Facebook account to find out whether or not their account has been impacted. Now, Rosen is reducing that estimate down to around 30 million who 'actually had their tokens stolen.

On that page, following some preliminary information about the investigation, the question "Is my Facebook account impacted by this security issue?" appears midway down.

Facebook plans to contact all 30 million identified accounts with exactly what happened, how it affects them and what precautionary measures can be taken moving forward. 'In the process, however, this technique automatically loaded those accounts' Facebook profiles, mirroring what these 400,000 people would have seen when looking at their own profiles. Message content was not available to the attackers, with one exception. This should not have an effect on passwords, but if you are experiencing problems while logging in, you can go here. For 1 million people, the attackers did not access any information.

A major breach announced by Facebook last month affected 20 million fewer customers than at first predicted, but for 14 million unlucky users hackers managed to access virtually all their profile info. Facebook says the problem has been fixed.

The news comes as Facebook is at an all-time low level of trust with many governments, regulators, investors, and users worldwide believing that Facebook is not doing enough to safeguard personal data. The tokens work like digital keys that keep users logged in to Facebook so they don't have to repeatedly enter their username and passwords.

Facebook said third-party apps that use a Facebook login and Facebook apps like WhatsApp and Instagram were unaffected by the breach.

"This doesn't sound very targeted at all", he said. The company said it hasn't ruled out the possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same vulnerability. If you allegedly sent out friend requests to people you don't know, or spot messages that you didn't write then alarm bells should be going off.

Facebook said the FBI is investigating, but asked the company not to discuss who may be behind the attack.
