Red Dead Redemption 2: head writer reveals 100 hour work weeks

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar managed to vex the entire games industry this week when studio co-founder Dan Houser suggested to Vulture that some team members had been working 100-hour weeks to polish off Red Dead Redemption 2. They questioned how games like Grand Theft Auto could generate a billion dollars in revenue while the people who made the game were forced to endure such conditions.

There seems to be some confusion arising from my interview with Harold Goldberg. After working on the game for seven years, the senior writing team, which consists of four people, Mike Unsworth, Rupert Humphries, Lazlow and myself, had, as we always do, three weeks of intense work when we wrapped everything up.

Needless to say, the comments by Houser drew a huge amount of ire in the gaming media as it's just weeks after Telltale Games shuttered its doors, with many staff complaining about overwork and "crunch" overtime in order to get games ready for shipping.

And though we can obviously expect that experience to be quite different from Rockstar's other online offering, there are some similarities that we can expect to see regardless.

Additionally, Rockstar will drop the launch trailer for the game tomorrow at 10AM, which we'll slip in here once it goes live. Across the whole company, we have some senior people who work very hard purely because they're passionate about a project, or their particular work, and we believe that passion shows in the games we release.

It was during the weekend that New York Magazine published its story on the making of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Without a doubt, Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the biggest game releases for October 2018, if not the year, so players around the world are wondering exactly when they will be able to pre-load the game onto their PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems.
