Salmonella in raw chicken makes 92 people sick, CDC says

A multidrug-resistant strain of salmonella linked to raw chicken products has sickened almost 100 people across multiple states, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC).

Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that many types of raw chicken products from a variety of sources are contaminated with salmonella Infantis and are making people sick.

The CDC says the outbreak started in January, and more people have tested positive for this strain through September. So far, no deaths have been reported.

Meanwhile, the CDC is not advising people to avoid eating properly cooked chicken products, nor telling retailers to stop selling raw chicken. The strain has shown up in samples of pet food, chicken pieces, ground check and whole chickens.

The CDC has not pinpointed the common supplier at this time. "General ways you can prevent Salmonella infection include good handwashing and cooking chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F".

This particular strain of Salmonellahas demonstrated resistance to multiple antibiotics, meaning treatment may be more hard for severe cases.

Additionally, the CDC does not recommend raw diets for pets, as this can make animals, as well as people handling the raw food, sick.

People sick with this strain have experienced stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea and fever 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment other than fluids, the CDC says.

The investigation is ongoing and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
