Pharmacist who refused to fill prescription no longer with Meijer

Rachel Peterson and her husband

A MI woman says a pharmacist at a Meijer store refused to fill a prescription for her miscarriage on religious grounds.

But Peterson's prescription did not include mifepristone. She's working with the American Civil Liberties Union to change Meijer's policy and is willing to go to court if need be to keep what happened to her from happening to another woman.

That's when an Ionia woman says she brought a prescription to the store in Petoskey and the pharmacist on duty refused to fill it, citing his religious beliefs.

Then the pharmacist made things worse. The organization's MI policy strategist, Merissa Kovach, said Peterson was "clearly a victim of sex discrimination", arguing that "had the customer been a man prescribed the same medication, that is also commonly used to treat ulcers, the pharmacist would have filled it".

On Tuesday, the ACLU sent a letter of complaint to Meijer demanding a clear company-wide policy that compels pharmacists to fill all prescriptions regardless of religious beliefs. A Meijer pharmacist hours away in Ionia agreed to fill the prescription.

"When you're at one of the lowest moments of your life, you don't expect this sort of demeaning treatment", said Rachel Peterson.

In a statement to CBS News, Meijer said: "A pharmacist may refuse to fill a prescription based upon religious beliefs".

When Peterson told the pharmacist that her OB/GYN found no signs of viability from the fetus, which confirmed an early pregnancy loss, he accused her of lying and said "that was just [her] word". "If no other pharmacist is available, the pharmacist must consult with the patient to arrange for the transfer of the prescription to another pharmacy that is convenient to them".

Fecher had previously told Fox News an investigation into the allegations was conducted.

The ACLU says the actions of the pharmacist was discriminatory and violated Michigan's public accommodations laws.

"This was a really traumatic, awful thing - and on probably one of the worst days, worst moments of her life", Merissa Kovach, a policy strategist with the ACLU of MI, told Fox News.

"There's no greed associated with this. He is a medical professional and he took an oath to take care of patients and he failed to do that", Peterson said, adding she doesn't "wish any ill intent on anyone". I was naïve in that sense. "It was quite an eye-opener for both of us and for my family as well".
