Trump Threatens Military Response to Asylum Seekers

Trump has made security on the southern border one of the signature issues of his two-year presidency, calling for a "wall" and frequently railing against what he describes as a flood of rapists, gangs and "bad hombres".

President Trump's watching his worst nightmare unfold - more than 1,500 immigrants marching from Honduras to the US, and he's vowing our troops will stop them. if Mexico can't get the job done.

Trump also suggested that the migrants hoping to enter the USA are linked to crime and drugs that he said are "pouring in", and he called on Mexico to stop the "onslaught".

More than 2,000 Hondurans are in a migrant caravan trying to reach the United States.

He also slammed the leaders of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala for failing to intervene.

Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo will visit Mexico City on Friday to meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Trump said he considers the increasing flow of migrants an "assault on our country" led by the Democratic Party, which has blocked Republican proposals to overhaul and tighten the immigration system and improve border security, including building a wall along the southern border.

Trump claimed that "Criminal elements and DRUGS [are] pouring in" and that it is "All Democrats [sic] fault for weak laws!" As many as 4,000 people are making their way from Honduras to Guatemala and north to Mexico, with their sights set on the USA border.

The president's warning echoes an earlier tweet on Wednesday, in which he again blasted Democrats for refusing to approve tighter border control and immigration laws.

Mexico in a statement Wednesday said that anyone who entered its country illegally would be processed and returned to their country of origin.

One America's Luke Glaze has more.

Mexican officials say the Hondurans won't be allowed to enter as a group, and would either have to show a passport and visa - something few apparently have - or apply individually for refugee status, a process that can mean waiting for up to 90 days for approval. The trafficking networks are controlled by drug cartels and use drug-smuggling routes to help the migrants cross the US border illegally.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall at the border with Mexico, Mr Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help the Department of Homeland Security secure the border in four southwestern U.S. states.

"We hope that in this big caravan group, they let us in", he added, referring to the US.

Those comments seemed back into Central America, where newspapers viewed the president's get-tough talk as a symptom of the looming congressional elections in the U.S.

At least five US states later refused to send the troops amid an outcry over a policy to separate migrant children from their parents, since discontinued.

Trump's tweets come in response to the caravan of more than 4,000 people who are traveling from Honduras toward the U.S.'s southern border.

The previous day, the migrants advanced about 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the Honduras-Guatemala border to arrive at the city of Chiquimula. And states like Guatemala and Mexico passing the buck to the United States doesn't constitute a "best endeavor" to determine who is a genuine refugee.

Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray plans to make the formal request during a meeting Thursday with U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres in NY.
