Welcome to the biggest, most luxurious SUV BMW has ever conceived.

The X7 looks a lot like BMW's X5, with a massive front grille divided into BMW's signature "kidney" shape. As expected, the design remains true to that concept vehicle!

However, the wheelbase between the two is much closer - 2,975 mm for the X5 and 3,105 mm on the X7.

The styling is sharp on the SUV with the grille taking prominence from most angles, while the sleek headlamps with the J-themed LED DRLs help to minimise the visual bulk. BMW has also given two exhaust on either side of the bumper.

Inside, there are three rows of seats.

It will come come standard with seating for seven people, though you can opt for captain's chairs in the second row if you only need space for six.

Step inside cabin and everything seems very familiar just like any other modern BMW such as the 8 Series, fouth-gen X5, Z4 and the recently unveiled 3 Series. BMW says there's uncompromised space in the third row, complete with armrests, cupholders and USB ports.

The X7 comes with seven seats as standard, and unlike the latest X5, whose rearmost seats are best reserved for teenagers or small adults, the X7's should be spacious enough to be comfortable for long journeys. BMW also proffers its new intelligent personal assistant as a co-driver and vehicle expert responding to simple natural language voice commands. The dash is dominated by a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an infotainment screen of the same size. The X7 is BMW's answer to the big SUVs from the competitors like the Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90. Among the optional extras is a cooled and heated front seat cup holder.

Starting with the power sources, buyers (subject to specific market availability) will be able to select between four main engine options. It gets roof rails and a chrome window surround. You could, however, spec it with 21- or 22-inch rims.

On the one hand, the incomprehensible, because both the seats and the motors are finished in the kit and the X7 is still a half-class upgrade might. Customers can choose from Design Pure Excellence, M Sport and BMW Individual which allows interior customizations.

An xDrive30d is also available, with a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel six-cylinder tuned to produce 195kW and 620Nm for a 7.0-second 0-100km/h time, and 6.5-6.8L/100km claimed fuel efficiency.

The BMW X7 will be available in gasoline (340 to 462 horsepower) and diesel (265 to 400 horsepower) versions. The xDrive50i is a V8 engine, while the rest are six-cylinder units.

The BMW X7 is the biggest passenger SUV from the German automaker and it's headed for South Africa.

For now, none of the engines feature any electrification, they all come attached to an eight speed Steptronic transmission and all-wheel drive. The auto rides on air suspension that can vary the X7's ground clearance by 80 mm.

Production of all X7s will take place at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States. Global sales are slated to start in March 2019.
