Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath to retire after England Test series opener

Mark Wood is confident he will play in England's final ODI against Sri Lanka

Galle is a sentimental venue for Herath - not only did he make his Test debut there in 1999, he also needs only one more wicket to join Muttiah Muralitharan in having taken 100 wickets at the ground.

Galle - Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath, the most successful left-arm spinner in Test history, will retire after the series opener against England in Galle next month, local media reported on Monday. The 40-year-old missed the third Test against India at home last year with a bad back and has also had to grapple with knee injuries for a while now.

Jonny Bairstow faces a race to be fit for the start of England's Test series against Sri Lanka after being ruled out of the last two limited-overs games with ankle ligament damage.

Whether he will be ready to take part in the first Test which begins in Galle on November 6, playing as either a specialist batsman or wicketkeeper, is not yet known.

England could come up against ambidextrous spinner Kamindu Mendis once again after he was included in Sri Lanka's squad for the one-off Twenty20 global in Colombo on Saturday.

He was subsequently told he would not be available for the final match of the series on Tuesday or the stand alone Twenty20 which follows it.

Angelo Mathews, axed as captain and from the squad by Sri Lanka after they were dumped out of September's Asia Cup in the group stage, continues to be overlooked, but veteran seamer Lasith Malinga returns to the T20 fold for the first time in over a year.

Herath will now draw the curtains on a 19-year-long global career after claiming 522 wickets across all formats of the game.

Herath, who played for Hampshire and Surrey in county cricket, has 34 five-wicket hauls to his name and has taken 10 wickets or more nine times.

His retirement will leave a substantial hole in the Sri Lanka side, with offspinner Dilruwan Perera likeliest to replace him as leader of the spin attack, for the remainder of the England series at least.
