Steelers have no idea when Le’Veon Bell will return

Le'Veon Bell still has not informed the Pittsburgh Steelers of when he plans to show up for work, and that may have something to do with all the trade talk surrounding the star running back. That didn't happen, and there was a more recent indication he'd be back with the team this past week during their bye.

There are some sources around the league who believe that because Bell does not want to be traded, he will wait until after the NFL's October 30 trade deadline to return to work. Had Bell reported during the bye, the team would have not paid him for his services that week, sources said, and the Steelers will utilize a two-week roster exemption on him when he does report.

The Steelers could still trade Bell without him signing his franchise tender and reporting to their facility, but a deal would be predicated on him doing so before being moved.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said this past week he doesn't expect the team to trade Bell. It would also be hard for the Steelers to get fair compensation for Bell in a trade, because his new team couldn't negotiate a long-term deal and they'd be getting a player who isn't happy on a one-year deal and hasn't played football since January.

Bell is exercising the leverage he has over the Steelers by staying away as long as possible. They still do miss Bell, however. The three-time Pro Bowler has held out of Pittsburgh's first six games over a contract dispute.
