Appendix removal is linked to lower risk of Parkinson’s

No appendix? Your risk of Parkinson's is reduced by more than 20% Having your appendix removed comes with an unexpected advantage; scientists have discovered that an appendectomy reduces the risk of Parkinson's by up to 25 percent. "And if it were to enter the brain, it can seed and spread from there and have neurotoxic effects that could eventually lead to Parkinson's disease".

According to the study, published on Wednesday (Oct. 31) in the journal Science Translational Medicine, people who had their appendix removed when they were young were 19 to 25 percent less likely to develop Parkinson's later in life.

Research suggests that severing this nerve may prevent sticky clumps of a protein called alpha-synuclein, from spreading to the brain, reducing the Parkinson's risk. However, Labrie warned that appendectomy does not guarantee that a person will not be diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Scientists from the United States of America took up the study of the process of the emergence and development of Parkinson's disease.

"Our findings show the appendicular appendix as the region of origin of Parkinson's and open a new path for alternative therapeutic strategies that will harness the role of the gastrointestinal system in the development of the disease".

Parkinson's disease has always been considered a disease of the brain, but research out Wednesday found it may start in the gut - specifically in the appendix, a tiny organ near the large intestine. "That's what we plan to look at next - which factor or factors tip the scale in favor of Parkinson's".

There are plenty of people that still develop Parkinson's with no appendix and others that don't get sick despite carrying the protein. He said he found the study results convincing.

Again, don't go removing your appendix just yet. Although the appendix has gained a reputation of being redundant, in fact plays an important role in our immune system, regulating the bacteria in our gut and, is playing a role in Parkinson's disease. Professionals at the Van Andel Research Institute in Michigan, USA, analyzed data from 1.7 million people.
