Bluetooth certification indicates new AirPods are coming

AirPods 2 leak hints at Bluetooth 5.0 and new biometric sensors

Little is known about the so-called AirPods 2, but now a new certification from the Bluetooth SIG - the standards organisation that oversees the development and licensing of the wireless technology - reveals some interesting new tidbits.

Apple actually showed off that feature in September when it introduced the iPhone XS, XS Max, and iPhone XR, but didn't launch the new AirPods with the feature baked in.

The listing on SIG's website was first noticed by MySmartPrice, an India-based tech publication, and it not only confirms the existence of Apple's next-gen true wireless earbuds, but also gives us some key details. The initial filing, however, only covered functions and concepts outlined under worldwide Class 9, including audio-centric concepts like "components and accessories" capable of sound recording and reproducing via "speakers, earphones, headphones, microphones, voice control, radio transmitters, or other apparatus". Now, the latest patent filing reveals three new classes - 10, 14 and 28. The Class 14 covers horological and chronometric instruments which would mean greater compatibility between Apple Watch and Apple AirPods.

"Games and Playthings" (Class 28), which is a broad category covering everything from "electronic hand-held game units", to computer games, video games and other "electronic amusement apparatus".

The above patents offer a big clue - the AirPods 2 would most probably include a heart rate sensor, which will continuously monitor your heart rate.

It looks like the new AirPods are finally coming.
