Heathrow airport hit by delays after runway lights fail

Passengers at Heathrow airport have been warned a "technical issue" affecting lighting on the runways could affect their journeys.

Almost one in seven flights due to land at Heathrow between 6am and 8.59am were delayed by more than 15 minutes, according to figures from aviation data firm FlightStats.

It added it would start "diverting some flights that are airborne and due to arrive at Heathrow shortly".

The worst delay was to a United Airlines flight from Newark, near NY, which was operating three hours and five minutes behind schedule.

Britain's largest airport said it was trying to fix the problem, but advised passengers to check with their airline to see if their flights had been affected.

Heathrow apologised to travellers in a tweet, asking them to check their flight status and communicated via Twitter their runways were reopened. This included 11 flights delayed by more...

It said: "Following earlier runway lighting issues both runways are now open and operational".

"We apologise for any impact this might have on our passengers".

Airline passengers in the United States and other worldwide airports around the world took to social media to complain of being unable to take off due to delays in the UK.
