Trendsetting Tarok: VW reveals compact bakkie concept

Beyond this crafty convenience feature, Tarok is graded as a proper South African class full-size bakkie, with a 1000kg payload capacity.

Following last week's teaser, VW has fully uncovered its new Tarok pickup concept at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil.

The Tarok concept features a dual-cab body with seating for five people, a panoramic glass roof, and LED lights visually connecting the grille and headlight units.

As we mentioned in the earlier article, it features a relatively small tray (compared to the likes of the larger Amarok), but has an innovative "variable loading area" that can be extended thanks to a folding rear panel in the back of the cabin.

Volkswagen has succeeded in merging the practical advantages of the Tarok Concept with a lifestyle-oriented design.

The Tarok has a flip-down wall behind the rear seats that extends the length of the bed from less than four feet to over six when the seats are folded and nine if the tailgate is also opened. If you like what you see here, you'll be pleased to know that Volkswagen has said it would make "barely any changes" to the Tarok's design from concept to series production. As a result, drivers can also use the back of the cab to transport extra-long items.

Inside, the Tarok has a customisable digital instrumentation screen, a high-resolution infotainment system, and colour-coded dashboard and door trim accents. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic, and the ride has permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive. The brand furthermore adds the bakkie also "has the potential to boost Volkswagen's model range in other global markets". The future series model will start out with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel direct injection (TDI) TSI engine that also delivers 110 kW / 150 PS.

The production-spec Tarok will come with a 1.4-litre TSI petrol motor and Volkswagen says the concept is actually a thinly veiled version of former, which will hit the local markets soon.
