United Kingdom business bosses add voices to call for new Brexit vote

More than 70 business leaders have signed a letter calling for a second Brexit referendum More

Labour peer Baroness Kennedy QC, former Court of Appeal judge Konrad Schiemann and David Edward, a former judge of the Court of Justice of the European Communities are among 1,400 lawyers who have called for a People's Vote on EU membership.

The letter follows a similar one from more than 70 business leaders who have backed a second Brexit referendum, warning that the United Kingdom faces "either a blindfold or a destructive hard Brexit" that would be bad for firms and jobs.

The letter concludes: "We are now facing either a blindfold or a destructive hard Brexit".

However, Mrs May insists a second referendum on Brexit isn't on the cards.

A new group called "Business for a People's Vote", which includes Justin King, former boss of the Sainsbury's supermarket chain, and John Neill, head of the vehicle parts supplier Unipart, is to be launched as campaigners raise the pressure on politicians.

Other signatories include Zoopla founder Alex Chesterman, Waterstones managing director James Daunt, and Rolls Royce chairman Sir Simon Robertson.

'Despite the Prime Minister's best efforts, the proposals being discussed by the Government and the European Commission fall far short of this, and they are not almost as good as the current deal we have inside the EU.

"The uncertainty over the past two years has already led to a slump in investment, which will make our country poorer", said the letter.

'Given that neither was on the ballot in 2016, we believe the ultimate choice should be handed back to the public with a People's Vote'.

It feels like the right time to be flying the flag with just a few months to go before the looming possibility of a cataclysmic Brexit, said one of the people who has signed it.

Theresa May has insisted that a so-called people's vote is off the agenda, and argued this week that a deal is within striking distance.

Her latest plan for Brexit would resolve the Northern Irish border problem with customs checks happening in factories rather than at the border.

The letter will warn that Brexit proposals being discussed by Britain and the European Union will not deliver frictionless trade for Britain after it exits the bloc in March, a source told Sky News.
