49ers aggressively pursued new Falcons pass rusher Bruce Irvin

Steelers offered Bruce Irvin more money but he signed with the Falcons

Irvin was perfectly pleased to reveal that powerhouse teams like the Steelers and the Patriots both offered him more money to sign, yet the defensive end chose instead to go back to his Atlanta roots. Now it's a reality. The Falcons, who play at Cleveland on Sunday, did not release terms of the deal. Irvin, 31, should help bolster the pass rush working alongside former sack champ Vic Beasley Jr. and Takk McKinley.

The Falcons and Seahawks are 4-4, two games behind Carolina (6-2) and 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota (5-3-1) in the race for the conference's wild-card playoff berths. You can't put a price on the chance for me to play for my people and city!

Irvin hasn't been ashamed to talk about his troubled past, but it's simply motivation for him to strive for more.

Oakland was expected to enter the season with Irvin and Khalil Mack leading the defense as bookend pass rushers. After the game, first-year coach Jon Gruden explained his decision to keep Irvin on the sidelines for most of the game. Norton coached the Seahawks' linebackers when Irvin was in Seattle, and he served as the Raiders' defensive coordinator when Irvin signed there as a free agent in 2016.

Quinn mentioned getting Irvin on the field "as soon as possible" because Irvin is so familiar with the scheme.

He's played with the Seahawks and Raiders in his seven years in the league with his best year coming last year with Oakland when he had 58 tackles and eight sacks.
