Android apps will update while you're using them

Android Dev Summit

You'll have two options with this API; the first is a full-screen experience for critical updates when you expect the user to wait for the update to be applied immediately. However, it also offers developers a way to bump users up to the latest version of an app if they've built a bunch of new features and want all users to have access to them.

A new Android API will allow Android users to keep using an app even while it is being updated. Google has introduced new tools and features at Android Developer Summit.

But Google noted that the app has grown to 30 million monthly users, some of which were using powerful phones with plenty of storage. If a player opts into the update, the new version is then downloaded in the background while the app remains running and can either be installed once it's complete or the next time the app is minimized or closed.

For those unfamiliar with this app, Files by Google allows Android users to free up space on their mobile devices by storing it in the cloud using Google Drive.

The latest Android Developers blog celebrates ten-years of Android and includes the introduction of the just announced support for foldable displays.

Google's new contract for Android vendors that want its core apps aims to bring the industry in line with Samsung's security patching model.

This month over 118,000 new projects using Kotlin started in Android Studio, marking a 10-fold increase on a year ago, according to Google. Google hasn't announced an official date that it will get wide release but said the API will be available to all developers soon.
