Buildings collapse in Marseille

Two buildings have collapsed side by side in the French city of Marseille, injuring at least two people.

Although reports on BFM TV claimed that out of the 12 apartments in the collapsed buildings ninewere occupied.

The collapse, which spewed clouds of dust into the air, occurred on a street close to the city's famous Old Port. Fire services said that two people were "lightly injured" but that they have been treated. French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday evening it was unknown if anyone was killed or trapped. Authorities were searching for any victims trapped beneath the rubble.

According to Denormandie, around 10 people lived in the other one, which was undergoing building work. "The urgent task is to determine whether there are people we can save".

Dozens of fire officers were at the scene and thick dust covered cars in the street.

One of the buildings was clearly in poor fix, with boarded-up windows and large visible cracks on its facade before it collapsed.

Quoted as saying by local media, Sabine Bernasconi, the local mayor of the 1st and 7th districts of Marseille, said one of the buildings was in poor condition and had been subject to an evacuation order.

The public have been urged to avoid the area amid fears more buildings are at risk of collapse.
