Dead After California Shooting At Popular Nightspot, Police Say

Sheriff Geoff Dean, who choked back tears while talking about Sergeant Helus, said his friend had been talking to his wife when the shooting call came in.

Kuredjian said it has been "quite some time" since there was a shooting of any kind in Thousand Oaks, a city of about 130,000 people about 40 miles (64 kilometres) west of Los Angeles, just across the county line.

"He was somewhat irate, acting a little irrationally", Dean said.

At least 12 people are dead, including sheriff's sergeant Ron Helus, after a 28-year-old gunman opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday. "But I've learned, it doesn't matter what community you're in, it doesn't matter how safe your community is".

Multiple other victims with different levels of injury have been confirmed.

Helus was married with a grown son and took up fly fishing a few years ago, Buschow said. "We go to the gym together, work out together.it's horrific and bad and it saddens our hearts". Witnesses said the gun was apparently a semi-automatic weapon.

His colleague, Sgt. Julie Novak, told "FOX & friends" that Helus was "an unbelievable guy" who loved helping people. He was set to retire next year, CNN reported. "He loved helping people, he loved protecting people".

Ventura County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Eric Buchow told the station there were "multiple fatalities" and the gunman was dead inside.

He said he has no doubt Helus' tactics at the scene "were sound when he went in".

"As soon as he walked in he had ideal form", said Whittler, who added she grew up in a military family.

A Highway Patrol officer pulled Helus out and waited for reinforcements.

"It's really sad", Novaks said.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean briefs reporters at the intersection of United States 101 freeway and the Moorpark Rad exit as police vehicles close off the area responding to a shooting at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 8, 2018.

Tributes to the fallen officer poured in nearly immediately Thursday morning.

President Donald Trump tweeted about the tragedy Thursday morning, thanking law enforcement for their bravery.

Kuredjian said that shots were still being fired when sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene. "I don't know the condition of the victims but my understanding is there are a number (of) wounded included a local deputy ... all of the victims have been transported to hospitals", Fox told CNN on the phone.

Justin Meek was identified as a victim by family to ABC7 News.

An American flag hung on the garage at Long's home on Thursday as law enforcement gathered outside preparing to search his home.
