George Burgess learns fate for 'cowardly' act against Kiwis

Burgess will miss the first three games of South Sydney's season next year as well as the final test of the England New Zealand series this weekend

Burgess was also fined £500 (NZ$972) after a three-man global disciplinary panel - including one representative each from England and New Zealand - assessed the incident.

England forward George Burgess insists he didn't intentionally gouge the eye of New Zealand captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak after receiving a four-match suspension.

The incident, which occurred 20 minutes from the end of England's 20-14 victory, went unpunished by referee Gerard Sutton.

The 26-year-old forward was found guilty of behaviour contrary to the true spirit of the game by an global disciplinary panel following the incident which occurred during England's win over the Kiwis in the second test in Liverpool on Monday.

Both sides are looking to put the incident behind them, and not letting it overshadow preparations for Sunday's final test, where the Kiwis will be looking to avoid a series whitewash and a 4th defeat in 2018 to England.

"It is not in my makeup as a rugby league player and never has been".

"I have too much respect for the players I play against and with", Burgess added.

However, the Rugby Football League announced on Monday that New Zealand cited the incident and Burgess was referred to a disciplinary hearing.

"I'm sure he didn't do it on objective", New Zealand captain Watene-Zelezniak said. It was a bit blurry after that.

The 23-year-old Penrith fullback was unsure if Burgess' act was intentional. He is a big boy with some big fingers, so his hand on my face probably covers it all. I don't think that's in their kit bag but it is what it is you just have to deal with it.

Burgess was recalled by England from a two-year absence for the opening autumn global against France and he also played in both games against the Kiwis so far.
