Kansas elects Native American lesbian Sharice Davids to Congress

Deb Haaland makes history Becomes first Native American woman to serve in Congress

"Seventy years ago, Native Americans right here in New Mexico couldn't vote", Haaland told supporters Tuesday night, according to KOB-TV.

Election Night 2018 turned out to be a night of firsts - with groundbreaking victories for Native American, Muslim, black, gay and female candidates.

The vote comes almost two years after women marched on Washington in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

As of early Wednesday morning, voters were on track to send at least 99 women to the House, surpassing the previous record of 84.

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, became an overnight sensation this summer after her upset primary defeat of Rep. Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent who was the No. 4 Democrat in the House. And although she has some age on Ocasio-Cortez - she's turning 30 in December - Finkenauer is still one of the youngest people ever elected to the House. She ran a grass roots campaign that took on the "Queens Democratic Party machine" and championed progressive proposals, such as the abolition of the Immigration Customs Enforcement (Ice), a single-payer health care plan and tuition-free college.

Davids is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from Kansas, the first Native American woman and the first lesbian Native American individual elected to Congress. Yoder had represented the district since 2011.

Davids, a political newcomer, won by more than 9 percentage points over her four-term challenger.

Representing Minnesota, she will be the first Congress member to wear a hijab or head scarf.

Davis is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation in Wisconsin, and one of two Native Americans running in this election, sharing the distinction with New Mexico Democrat Deb Haaland, who also won her race.

Rashida Tlaib was born to a family of Palestinian immigrants in Detroit.

Her campaign received national attention after Taylor Swift endorsed her Democrat opponent, Phil Bredesen. With no challenger on Election Day, Pressley made it official that she'll be the first black person representing MA in the House. Together, we made history!
