The candidates who made history at the 2018 U.S. midterm elections

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez votes in her district in the Bronx

In a tweet sent early Wednesday morning, Stefanik congratulated Ocasio-Cortez and said she would "proudly hand off that mantle to" the young congresswoman-elect.

Almost two years after women spilled out into the streets of Washington and in cities across the country in defiance of the inauguration of President Donald Trump, the United States is sending more women than ever before to the House of Representatives.

In a year that has been defined by the political awakening and activism of women, the mid-term is testing whether those women will reach record-breaking numbers in Congress and in governor's mansions across the country.

She added that even women of colour who were unsuccessful will inspire a new crop of candidates, similar to the white women encouraged to run after Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential election loss.

Last night, Donna Brazille, a strategist on CNN said a record number of 38 women of color will be serving in Congress (35 Democrats, three Republicans).

Another two Democrats made history as the first Latinas elected to Congress from Texas, a deeply red state.

Ocasio-Cortez is a dues-paying member of The Democratic Socialists of America and is trying to undo the stigma surrounding the term "socialist". "The first role of women as military flyers was during World War II as Women Airforce Service Pilots, an organization disbanded after the war", Colonel McSally said.

What is already the most diverse Congress ever will become even more so after Tuesday's elections, which broke barriers of race and gender. She is also openly lesbian, in a state that is traditionally conservative.

(8) Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the highest ranking Republican woman in Congress, comfortably won re-election last night.

Also in the House, Democrats Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI will be the first Muslim women to serve in Congress.

Progressive insurgent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, who overtook goliath Rep. Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for New York's 14th Congressional District in a stunning upset, became the youngest woman elected to Congress in the nation's history. Wallace also suggested Ingraham was being hypocritical, saying that if she gives Republicans credit for keeping the Senate, she must also give the Democrats credit for flipping the House. In elections for Congress, governorships and state legislatures alike, the number of women who ran outstripped previous years, as did the number of women nominated.

■In Tennessee, Republican Marsha Blackburn will become that state's first woman senator.

Around 80 per cent of the women candidates in this election were defending their seats, and around 70 per cent held them.

Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee, won a House seat in a heavily Democratic district in Minneapolis, where she will succeed Keith Ellison, himself the first Muslim elected to Congress.
