Trump points to second term as United States president

Donald Trump

Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday in a midterm setback for Donald Trump, but the USA president managed to avoid a feared "blue wave" as his Republican Party expanded its Senate majority after a polarizing, racially charged campaign.

That would give the Senate the role of blocking House-passed Democratic initiatives on everything from health care to the potential repeal of tax cuts on the wealthy that the GOP enacted a year ago. Even in the Senate where Democrats lost ground, they won the popular vote in those races by 15 points (they got 57 percent of the popular vote; the Republicans - just 42 percent). Tammy Baldwin held off a challenge from Republican Leah Vukmir, but her fellow Democrats Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Claire McCaskill of Missouri were defeated by their Republican opponents.

The mixed verdict in the first nationwide election of Trump's young presidency underscored the limits of his hardline immigration rhetoric in America's evolving political landscape, where college-educated voters in the nation's suburbs rejected his warnings of a migrant "invasion".

An expanded majority in the Senate will allow Republicans to continue confirming Trump's nominees to key posts. President Barack Obama's Democrats lost 63 seats in 2010.

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey faced a federal corruption trial in 2017.

"All you are going to do is end up in back and forth and back and forth, and two years is going to end up and we won't have done a thing", Mr Trump said. That didn't matter. All of them won re-election. John McCain, nominally a Republican, for contributing to the GOP's losing the House.

Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) lost to Democrat Jennifer Wexton, who partially ran her campaign by tying Comstock to Trump.

In Virginia's 7th District, a Republican-leaning area near Richmond, Republican Rep. Dave Brat was in a tight race with Democrat Abigail Spanberger, a former Central Intelligence Agency officer.

In Florida, six House seats are in play, and there are close and crucial battles for a Senate seat and the governorship. White men with college degrees, meanwhile, were evenly split, and whites without degrees voted strongly Republican, according to CNN's exit polls.

New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo - sometimes spoken of as a 2020 presidential contender - cruised to a third term.

At his watch party, Trump was upbeat.

If Mr Trump doesn't, then Mr Neal will file a legal request with the Treasury Secretary that would require the returns be disclosed to a small group of people on Capitol Hill.

President Trump wasn't on the ballot Tuesday night, but he may as well have been.

After all, the strong turnout among Democrats during the primaries suggested a more motivated base than their Republican rivals.

Nothing demonstrates the divisions better than the nature of the House and Senate races. In Maine, voters elected Democratic gubernatorial candidate Janet Mills after the outgoing Republican Gov. Paul LePage blocked a legislatively approved expansion for a year.

Overall, women voted considerably more in favor of congressional Democratic candidates - with fewer than 4 in 10 voting for Republicans, according to VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 115,000 voters and about 20,000 nonvoters - conducted for The Associated Press by NORC at the University of Chicago.

In suburban areas where key House races were decided, female voters skewed significantly toward Democrats by a almost 10-point margin.

History was working against the president in the Senate: 2002 was the only midterm election in the past three decades when the party holding the White House gained Senate seats. Voters scored Trump positively on the economy and for standing up "for what he believes in".

And then there's a lawsuit against Trump by almost 200 Democratic senators and representatives who accuse Trump of constantly violating the Constitution's emoluments provision banning the acceptance of gifts from foreign and domestic interests.

Ayanna Pressley was elected as Massachusetts' first black congresswoman.

After Tuesday's elections, a record number of women will serve in Congress come January 2019.
