Trump says 'too bad' to Republican losers who refused to embace him

But the Democrats' edge is narrow. The Republicans' three-seat expansion is a contrast to the 18 total seats lost by the Democrats in midterm elections in the Senate since 2010.

The president's party will maintain control of the executive branch of the government, in addition to the Senate.

The loss of the House is a serious blow to Trump who must now brace for the novel experience of oversight from Capitol Hill with Democratic committee chairmen promising constraints on his power that the GOP never attempted.

For example, Cummings and other Democratic lawmakers a year ago filed a federal lawsuit demanding disclosures of records to determine how Trump was approved by the General Services Administration to maintain the lease of the Trump International Hotel in Washington after he became president.

Trump said he hadn't asked Pence yet but then turned to the vice president and said: "Mike, will you be my running mate?"

Some Democrats said during their campaigns they would not back Pelosi, but it's not clear yet if there are any Democrats willing to challenge her for the post. Trump tweeted Pelosi "deserves to be chosen Speaker of the House by Democrats", that "she has earned this great honor", and even suggesting some Republicans could vote for her, if Democrats "give her a hard time". "His numbers went up and ours went down, and we under-performed in the next election".

Record diversity on the ballot may have helped drive turnout. The House Speaker is third in line to Presidency in the USA political hierarchy and considered one of the most powerful offices.

Voters in Minnesota and MI elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress: Ilhan Omar, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war, and Rashida Tlaib, a Detroit-born Palestinian-American. A margin of less than half a percentage point automatically triggers a recount.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas. Democrats also reclaimed a handful of blue-collar districts carried by both former President Barack Obama and Trump.

McConnell eschewed further attempts to get him to respond to heated presidential rhetoric, refusing to call the migrant caravan - still hundreds of miles from the southern US border - a "crisis", as Trump did in high profile campaign rallies created to turn out the GOP base.

In Minnesota, Omar, a 36-year-old naturalized American citizen and state representative, campaigned on policies embraced by the Democratic Party's most liberal wing: universal health care, free college tuition and robust public housing.

As for Utah Rep. Mia Love's loss Tuesday, Trump said: "Mia Love gave me no love, and she lost", adding, "Sorry about that, Mia". Trump and his daughter Ivanka, a senior White House adviser, both retained their stakes in the property.

According to projections by The New York Times, Democrats will have 229 seats in the 435-member House while Republicans will hold 53 seats in the 100-member upper chamber of Congress, up from 51.

Democrats' dreams of the Senate majority, always unlikely, were shattered after losses in top Senate battlegrounds: Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, North Dakota and Texas.

Some hurt worse than others.

Effectively, the Democrats won the popular vote from the more populous coastal, urban, liberal, progressive, and economically vibrant areas of America, while President Trump and his party prevailed in the vast geographic hinterland that is less-populated, less-educated and predominantly rural, conservative, white, and economically poor.

Overall, 6 in 10 voters said the country was headed in the wrong direction, but roughly that same number described the national economy as excellent or good.
