WMO: Ozone layer healing

School children hold umbrellas during an awareness campaign to protect the ozone layer as part of the International Ozone Day

Case in point: The ozone hole, which if everything goes according to plan could be healed up by the 2060s, according to a new report from the United Nations.According to the report, a decades-old global treaty to ban ozone-depleting chemicals has led to their decline and "much more severe ozone depletion in the polar regions has been avoided".

Scientists assessing the state of the ozone layer have shown that the Montreal Protocol - the worldwide agreement that committed to reversing the damage by phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals - is still working well.

Good news came from a place nearer the stratosphere, 10,000 feet above sea-level in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

The 2018 Assessment is the latest in a series of assessments prepared by the world's leading experts in the atmospheric sciences and under the auspices of the Montreal Protocol in coordination with the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).

Satellite and ground-level observations by NASA, the NOAA, the European Space Agency and scores of the weather stations around the globe have clearly divulged that the world is now safer than what it was in 1980s - at least from a deadly attack of the UV rays.

Ozone levels in the Northern Hemisphere will also return to 80s values by 2030, while the Southern Hemispheres sees its ozone levels to normalize by 2050. This is extremely good news for all living flora and fauna on this planet, but is especially welcome news for green activists. It is the singularly successful outcome of the unique worldwide agreement, that may inspire to take action on climate change.

The ozone layer appears to be healing itself, after years of depletion due to harsh man-made chemicals.

The one-week meeting opened on Monday in the presence of more than 600 delegates, whose main interest is to look for alternatives to reduce ozone depleting substances and prevent global warming. That said it all.

It is "very important", as the USA expert pointed out, because this measure will mean entering "new territory for the Montreal Protocol".

Next year the Kigali Amendment will be ratified, and signatories will be required to go back and work out how they're going to cut back on the production and usage of yet another polluting gas. Even there too, it is slated to contribute immensely to the Paris Climate Agreement of 2016.

Another crucial aspect discussed in the report is how the Kigali amendment will affect ozone hole reduction and global warming. Since the turn of the present century, however, it has been returning at an average rate of 2 percent per decade.

The IPCC report offered the clearest evidence to date of the drastic difference between the 1.5 degrees Celsius and 2 degrees Celsius scenarios.

Don't give up; Collective and individual actions can change the world.

While this degradation is a global phenomenon, observations of seasonal fluctuations over the Antarctic led to the awareness of a 'hole' in the layer that put sensitive ecosystems at risk. The views expressed are personal.
