Andrew Jones, Texas Longhorns guard, returns after leukemia treatments

Andrew Jones

Jones checked into Texas' 2018 season opening win against Eastern Illinois with 11:40 remaining in the second half for his first minutes since being diagnosed with leukemia previous year.

"It's great to see Andrew out on the court", Texas coach Shaka Smart said.

Jones led the Longhorns last season in scoring before his diagnosis forced him away from the game.

Jones played nine minutes in the lopsided win and notched a single point via free throw. Soon after a road game against Iowa State on January 1, he received the leukemia diagnosis. He was exactly that, too, averaging 11.5 points and a team-high 3.5 assists per game as a freshman before testing the NBA Draft waters and eventually returning to school. He was soon diagnosed with leukemia and left the team for a cancer center in Houston for treatment.

Jones was in the hospital until February and completed outpatient treatment in August.

Last season Jones was sidelined him being diagnosed with leukemia.

The junior guard had battled leukemia and suffered a broken toe in practice last month, but overcame the odds against him after there were doubts he would even play this season.

Jones averaged 11.4 points per game as a freshman and declared for the National Basketball Association draft following his first season with the Longhorns but later withdrew his name and returned to school.

"He treated it humbly. The team doctor and the trainers want to make sure we're building back his strength before he gets thrown out there full time".
