BTS performance in Japan canceled amid anger over atomic bomb shirt

The worldwide superstars were due to perform on TV Asahi on Friday, but the station abruptly cancelled the show after a photo of member Jimin wearing the shirt went viral.

BTS's planned appearance on the Japanese music show "Music Station" has been postponed.

These netizens vented their frustration on online communities by posting that "IZ*ONE get to go on KBS tomorrow, while BTS get cancelled abruptly one day before their appearance on "Music Station", "BTS can't even go on a Japanese music show, but IZ*ONE just won #1 on a Korean music show", and more.

CNN has reached out to representatives for BTS, Big Hit Entertainment, for comment. "BTS will continue their efforts to connect with fans on stage and also through music", the group said on their website. Despite IZ*ONE's successful debut stage on KBS's ' Music Bank' last week, some netizens are still petitioning the girl group's promotions on the station; the government petition demanding a ban on IZ*ONE from appearing on public broadcast station programs now has approximately 30,000 signatures. The problem is not the relation between Japan and Korea.

"We have seen news that a T-shirt worn by one of the members has set off a furore".

BTS member Jimin reportedly wore the shirt past year, on Aug 15, when Koreans celebrate the end of Japanese occupation in 1945. The designs include a photo of Koreans celebrating liberation and a photo of an atomic bomb detonating in Japan, which contributed to Japan's surrender to the Allied forces and thereby Korea's liberation.

"We deeply apologize the viewers who were looking forward their performance", the station said. Late last month, South Korea's Supreme Court ordered a Japanese company to compensate four Koreans for wartime labor during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean peninsula.
