Democrats disagree on just how aggressively to go after president

The Wall Street Journal and the New York Daily News

"We were in the minority in the Republican caucus, but the middle is where things happen".

If we ignore the small number of years in which the president's party gained seats in the House, the average loss going back to 1862 is 38 seats and the median loss is 30 seats.

"The question for me on this whole leadership issue is not who leads us, it's more a question of how we're led", the six-term Democratic congressman said in an interview Wednesday.

As Trump and Pelosi extended overtures across Pennsylvania Avenue, they also shadowboxed around the new dynamic created by the House's ability to probe the president's business dealings and his administration.

"Two can play that game!" Still, he celebrated Republicans' success in retaining the Senate.

The congresswoman-elect for Michigan's 13th district, said she drew strength from being a "proud Palestinian-American, woman and Muslim".

Key Democrats said it would be premature to begin impeachment proceedings, adding that such a conversation should take place after special counsel Robert Mueller has completed his inquiry.

The president returned to one of his favourite themes in an attack on the media reporting of the midterms.

A little over an hour later, Trump tweeted that Sessions was gone.

Sessions's resignation came after months of personal insults and criticisms from Trump over his recusal from the investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign. Here are some of the silver linings that Trump can take from Tuesday's vote.

The Trump base will have no problem believing him when he says Mrs Pelosi and her Democrats are to blame for every ill in the country.

Ms Pelosi, who is favoured to pick up the House speaker's gavel, promised her party would serve as a counterweight to the White House.

"I give her a lot of credit".

Those backgrounds created a sense of authenticity voters responded to, said Maeve Coyle, a spokeswoman for EMILY's List in Washington, D.C., a group that works to elect Democratic women to office. "She has earned this great honor!" But congressional inaction on these popular initiatives will become a helpful issue in Trump's reelection.

Earlier on Wednesday Mr Trump highlighted Senate Republican gains but continued threatening Democrats, who by winning back control of the House of Representatives have the power to investigate the president's personal and professional conduct.

Pelosi noted that except for the first time she ran as speaker, she has always been opposed for the top job, which is voted on by Democratic lawmakers in the House.

Depending on who you asked ahead of Election Night, the 2018 midterms were a referendum on President Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress. And he downplayed reports of voter irregularity and suppression, particularly in Georgia, instead saying, "I heard it was very efficient in Georgia".

In the weeks leading up to the Midterms, Trump ramped up the rhetoric when it came to shading the Democrats.

In the upper chamber, they captured Democratic seats in Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota, won a marquee battle in Texas, and fought a Florida race to a recount.

Among other victories, Democrats flipped seats held most recently by retiring longtime GOP state Reps. Further, Democrats had an underwhelming performance in OH, where gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray lost and incumbent senator Sherrod Brown won by only six points against a weak Republican.

Progressive Democratic candidates in more competitive districts - like Dana Balter in New York's 24th district, Randy Bryce in Wisconsin's 1st district, and Kara Eastman in Nebraska's 2nd district - all lost to Republicans on Tuesday.

In Colorado, another purple state, Democrats maintained their hold on the governor's mansion and picked up a suburban House seat.

Trump made four campaign-season visits to OH, including Monday in Cleveland. "They're going to litigate all the way to the Supreme Court".

Democrats say that when it comes to the administration's response, for example, to the "caravan" of Central American immigrants, they want answers about the rationale behind the troop deployments and details on the force's rules of engagement. An analysis in Politico's "Florida Playbook" found that DeSantis did 16 points better with Cuban voters than Trump did in 2016. That's why he shifted the focus of his racially charged and viscerally xenophobic campaigning away from the House and toward the Senate, where Republicans had the advantage.
