Deschamps hopes Martial can maintain Man United form

Anthony Martial Manchester United Juventus 071118

Anthony Martial has been named in the France national team by head coach Didier Deschamps for the first time in eight months, following his impressive run of form with Manchester United.

Martial, 22, has not featured for France regularly since the European Championship on home soil in 2016, although he did start the 3-1 friendly win away at 2018 World Cup hosts Russian Federation in Saint Petersburg in March.

Deschamps acknowledged Martial's struggles to maintain his best form in the past have held him back at times.

'What he's now achieving with Manchester United is closer to what he's able to do regularly.

France squad in full: Alphonse Areola (Paris St-Germain), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Steve Mandanda (Marseille), Lucas Digne (Everton), Presnel Kimpembe (Paris St-Germain), Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City), Benjamin Pavard (Stuttgart), Adil Rami (Marseille), Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace), Djibril Sidibe (Monaco), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid), N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Blaise Matuidi (Juventus), Tanguy Ndombele (Lyon), Steven Nzonzi (Roma), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona), Nabil Fekir (Lyon), Olivier Giroud (Chelsea), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Anthony Martial (Manchester United), Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain), Florian Thauvin (Marseille).

"Today he is closer to what he can do in terms of investment and efficiency".

"He is there because of some injuries but he could have been on the list even without it".

The dynamic frontman has always been highly regarded, with Louis van Gaal having invested £58 million ($76m) of faith in his potential back in 2015. It depends on him but there is a lot more to come and he has been showing more over the past few weeks with his club. He can do it and he is doing it at Manchester United but he knows that it's not enough. "He needs to go up a level to be consistent over the course of a season and then multiple seasons".
