Disney plans new Star Wars prequel series

If you sense a disturbance in the Force, you're not alone.

A new Star Wars prequel series is on its way, this time for Walt Disney Co's planned Disney+ streaming service, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said on Thursday.

The direct-to-consumer service, which launches in late 2019, will feature original and library content across Disney's major entertainment brands: Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. And considering the character's history, we might get to see another fan-favorite droid make his return at some point too - Andor's faithful K-2S0, a reprogrammed Imperial security droid (voiced by Disney regular Alan Tudyk), who stole the show in the 2016 film.

Luna said in a statement that the format would be a chance to "explore this character more deeply".

Personally, I didn't really think Cassian Andor was a super memorable character from Rogue One, aside from his opening scene in which he straight-up murders an innocent man to preserve a key secret.

Jon Favreau is now hard at work on The Mandalorian, but we still don't know who will be running things with this new untitled Cassian Andor series.

The series is described as a "rousing spy thriller [that] will explore tales filled with espionage and daring missions to restore hope to a galaxy in the grip of a ruthless Empire". The show will take place before the events of Rogue One and show what made Andor into the callous calculated operative that he was in the Star Wars prequel. Given how Rogue One ends, this TV series clearly won't be a sequel unless it's a highly metaphysical and ponderous meditation on the afterlife. Per the release, the series will start filming next year. This could be a reaction to Solo: A Star Wars Story's lackluster performance at the box office, but it's more than likely a play to ensure that Disney+ can attract as many subscribers as possible.
