New take on The Jungle Book: Sneak peek of film revealed

Andy Serkis

Serkis added that Mowgli would be an "emotional version" of the literary classic.

After the world shelled out almost $1 billion for Jon Favreau's live-action take on The Jungle Book, Warner Bros. realized it may be hard to attain the same level of attention for Andy Serkis' take on the same story, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Very fast turnaround. This Mowgli is directed by Andy Serkis and features hybrid motion capture CGI with live-action, a bit like the other Jungle Book from Disney. From there, Mowgli will launch in additional theaters throughout the US and the United Kingdom.

In the remake, however, there's more a 2018-skew, with the animals pleading Mowgli to join the village and stop the humans from taking over the jungle.

Whatever the reason for that, the film will debut in LA, New York, San Francisco, and London on November 29 before coming to Netflix on December 7. The A-list cast also includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Matthew Rhys, and Freida Pinto. But since Mowgli, who was raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, has "never truly belonged in either the wilds of the jungle or the civilized world of man", his journey into both presents enormous challenges.

To top it off, Mowgli is left to pick sides as humans try to take over the jungle.

But while filming began in March 2015, after which an intense period of post-production was underway, Disney released its own grounded and somewhat gritty The Jungle Book in 2016.
