Sabathia agrees to $8M deal to stay with Yankees | AP sports

Cashman Yankees want to bring back Sabathia Happ

Multiple reports Tuesday night had Sabathia close to agreeing to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Yankees. The deal does not include any performance bonuses.

In 2018, Sabathia went 9-7 with a 3.65 ERA (153.0IP, 62ER) in 29 starts with the Yankees, producing his lowest ERA since 2012 (3.38).

The Reds hired Turner Ward from the Dodgers as their hitting coach on Tuesday, their second significant addition under new manager David Bell.

CC Sabathia didn't want to leave The Bronx without a second World Series title added to the one he helped win in 2009.

The past three seasons have reversed a negative trend from 2013-15, when Sabathia, who'll turn 39 in July, was in the early stages of transitioning from a power pitcher to a finesse hurler.

It was an easy reunion for the Yankees and their big lefty, who made it clear on the eve of the team's Game 4 loss in the ALDS that NY was where he wanted to be.

Sabathia's desire to stay in NY for what's expected to be his final season was apparent, as he turned down other opportunities to remain a Yankee, the source said. Over a 19-year career, Sabathia has racked up almost 3,500 innings, with 2,986 strikeouts and a 3.70 ERA.

"I do, " Sabathia told The Post on Wednesday when asked if he came back to take care of unfinished business. Sabathia was suspended the first five games of 2019 but has appealed.

NY expects to trade the 28-year-old starter this offseason, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Monday.

NY dropped below the luxury-tax threshold for the first time in 2018. The team is also interested in Seattle Mariners ace James Paxton as the Pacific Northwest team embarks on what might be a winter fire sale.

Given that GM Brian Cashman has not been bashful about the likelihood of trading Sonny Gray, this shouldn't be considred too much of a surprise. "It's not working. I'm not going to be willing to continue to walk through the fire and expect it to be a different result". Trust me. I think he's a heck of a pitcher. "He's a very successful major leaguer, and it's just going to happen somewhere else".
