Sabrina makers sued by Satanic Temple over statue

Cape Town - A Satanic Temple in America is suing Netflix and Warner Bros. for $50m (R704.5m) over its inclusion of the goat-headed statue of Baphomet, known as the "Sabbatic Goat" in its new drama series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The group is also seeking an injunction to block Netflix and Warner Bros., which produced the series, from distributing the show.

Baphomet is part of its campaign to "complement and contrast" a Ten Commandments monument in Oklahoma City on the grounds of religious freedom.

The Satanic Temple claims the entertainment giants copied its depiction of deity Baphomet in The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.

The Satanic Temple's co-founder Lucien Greaves said the statue of Baphomet, which the group funded via a crowdfunding campaign and now stands in Detroit, was being "denigrated" by a similar monument which is worshipped by characters in the show. While the organization says that the issue isn't the show's misrepresentation of Satanism, but the show's appropriation - co-founder Lucien Greaves alleges - of a monument designed and commissioned by the Temple.

Founded in 2012, the group does not believe in a supernatural Satan, but instead works to ensure the separation of church and state and holds Satan as a symbol of "opposition to arbitrary authority".

Sabrina's statue, which is the centerpiece of the witchcraft school that Sabrina attends, also features a winged man with a goat's head who is flanked by two young children.

It is based of the same comic book series which spawned Sabrina The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart and running from 1996-2003.
