Sony Quietly Revs the PlayStation 4 Pro

Ps4 Pro new model

A new version of Sony's Playstation 4 Pro has been rolled out and it includes one very important improvement: it's a lot quieter. But there's a catch: You can only obtain it as part of a single console bundle right now. The only other notable change is reportedly a new "figure 8" power plug - the same power adapter the Xbox One uses. That's despite actually running hotter than the two previous versions of the PS4 Pro console that have been released into the wild.

Analysis of the console's noise levels - done by entering photo mode during intro section of God of War and measuring noise at the top and rear of the units - found that the noise levels of the new console was several decibels lower than the original CUH-7100 models.

Last year, it released a version with a different RAM cooling system that seemed to help a bit with the fan noise.

As far as other changes go, that's about it, which would explain why Sony didn't make a big "to-do" about the most recent change. In the United Kingdom, at least, Digital Foundry believes CUH-7200s are only being distributed as part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 bundle pack for the time being, but a full rollout is nearly certain to follow soon.

It also bodes well for the rumoured development of the PS5 - no-one likes a noisy console, and assuming it is going to be a more powerful machine, it looks as if Sony is continuing to find new ways to make its hardware avoid being obnoxiously loud.
