South Africa win toss, bowl in second Australia ODI

Australia v South Africa: Home fans fall in love with Marcus Stoinis' - the game-changer

The win helped Australia end its 7-match losing streak, which was their longest in one-day global cricket.

Cross-seamed deliveries and cutters brought the most profit for bowlers on both sides, Dwaine Pretorius picking up 3 for 32 in the afternoon and Marcus Stoinis making several crucial breakthroughs for a return of 3 for 35 that turned the match decisively.

South Africa's top order made a lot of the same errors in execution as Australia's had earlier in the day, as well as coming up with a few of their own.

Faf du Plessis and David Miller added 74 for the fifth wicket, but when Du Plessis played on to his stumps off Pat Cummins, it left Miller with a burden that was too heavy.

Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and Dwaine Pretorius were all guilty of gifting their wickets to the Australians, three of them with poor shots, and in Markram's case, another awful piece of running which saw him short of his ground after he'd made 19. South Africa had won the first match of the series by 6 wickets at Perth earlier this week.

The South Africans slipped to 68 for 4 inside 15 overs before Miller and du Plessis fought back.

Miller dug in as partners fell to grind out a gutsy 51 before he was given out lbw on a review decision and the South African tail failed to wag.

Skipper Aaron Finch stressed beforehand the need to go back to basics and build partnerships, and he and Travis Head tried to set the tone after being sent into bat by Faf du Plessis.

Australia T20I Squad: Aaron Finch (c), Alex Carey (wk), Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Lynn, Glenn Maxwell, Ben McDermott, D'Arcy Short, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Andrew Tye, Adam Zampa.

Or rather, Australia's batsmen repeatedly found ways to get out, with poor shot selection throughout the top order.

Finch did neither one thing nor the other, and chopped a delivery from Pretorius on to his stumps after scoring 41.

But the Highveld Lions all-rounder didn't let the side down - with the ball - matching Phehlukwayo's haul of three wickets, thereby keeping a tight rein on the Australia scoring rate.

Lynn then seemed to take control of the innings, and in the 27th over got stuck into Kagiso Rabada, hitting him for a six and then three consecutive fours. Zampa gave the innings just a little oomph with a quickfire 22 and those runs, plus his fightback with the ball after an expensive five overs, would prove vital in the eventual outcome.
