Thousand Oaks shooting victim, survivors lived through Vegas massacre

Multiple people were killed in a mass shooting at a crowded bar in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday, officials said.

Authorities have identified the gunman and the handgun he used to kill 12 people at a southern California bar.

An undated photo of Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, who was shot and killed in a mass shooting at a Thousands Oaks, Calif., bar, November 7, 2018.

"It's got to change", said Gavin Newsom, governor-elect of California, at a news briefing on Thursday. "This doesn't happen anywhere else on planet Earth". Add Thousand Oaks Shooting as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Thousand Oaks Shooting news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Witnesses described a tall man, wearing all black with a hood covering part of his face, entering the bar shortly before midnight. He said he thought their injuries were minor, and that majority were likely injured as they escaped, some by breaking windows.

Three of the deadliest mass shootings in USA modern history have occurred since October 2017.

The shooting began at 23:20 local time on Wednesday about 40 miles (65km) north-west of Los Angeles, police say.

Among those killed was a three-decade veteran of the sheriff's department, 54-year-old Sergeant Ron Helus, who was married, had a grown son and was close to retirement. He was set to retire next year, CNN reported.

Twenty-three people were injured - some from "jumping out of windows, diving under tables", Dean said - and treated at area hospitals.

Von Molt said she and others from nearby California Lutheran University often gathered on Wednesday night to line dance to country music. Once safely outside, the uninjured hugged and awaited word about those still inside.

Mr Coffman remembered the last conversation he had with his 22-year-old son and said he knew Cody would've been trying to help people inside the bar. "One bar stool and straight through a window", he told reporters.

The identity of the gunman is allegedly 28-year-old David Ian Long, a military veteran who apparently drove his mother's auto to the scene.

Long was a veteran and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Deputies were called to Long's house in response to a disturbance in April, 2018 and "felt he might be suffering from PTSD", he said. Dean told reporters that there was no indication the suspect was targeting bar employees.

Possibly several hundred people were in the Borderline Bar and Grill at an event for college students when the shooting erupted, said Gary Kuredjian of the Ventura County Sheriff's office.

"They called out our crisis intervention team, our mental health specialists who met with him, talked to him, and cleared him".

Thousand Oaks mayor Andy Fox reminded that his city is "consistently ranked one of the highest with respect to the lowest crime rate per capita, we're proud of that". The extent of the victim's injuries has not yet been released.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and praised law enforcement officers for their response.

Helus and a highway patrol officer exchanged gunfire with Long, he said, and the sergeant was shot "several times". God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more.
