Vine Founder Dom Hofmann Launching New App Byte In 2019

Twitter

After months of waiting, Vine app's fans can finally rejoice.

Hofmann created Vine in 2012 and Twitter acquired it the same year. The new video looping service is called "Byte", and according to a tweet from Hofmann this afternoon, it'll launch in Spring 2019.

Despite a dedicated and engaged user base, Vine struggled to monetise its platform like its contemporaries. Twitter, which owns Vine, officially disabled new uploads in October 2017, but still hosts the app's content online.

The hype is extremely real for Vine 2.0, and today's announcement is a pleasant surprise - especially since OG founder Dan Hofmann revealed "indefinite delays" for byte back in May. It gained vast popularity and was acquired by Twitter in 2013 but was unceremoniously discontinued late in 2016 amid strong competition from Snapchat and Instagram. Last November, Hofmann said that he is working on a successor of Vine. Snapchat's failings in recent years may have opened the door for another Vine-style app to exist again, but Instagram's Stories will prove hard to compete with.

The only good social media site, Vine, is set to return to our lives - in a way.
