Welbeck hospitalised after 'serious' ankle injury, Emery confirms

Sporting Lisbon will try to join Arsenal at the top of Europa League Group E on Thursday night

Danny Welbeck scored the 77th-minute victor, which gave Arsenal sole possession of first place in Group E. The Gunners haven't lost in their last 14 matches and have found their form under manager Unai Emery, a three-time victor of the Europa League with Sevilla.

Understandably, fans have been expressing their disappointment that Welbeck appears to have suffered yet another serious injury as his career at Arsenal has been blighted by a number of injury problems since he joined from Manchester United. "You can see on the pitch people know where they need to run, where they need to press, you can see the difference already".

Welbeck was making his sixth start under Emery this season and was being linked with a January move.

"We follow him every match", the Arsenal manager said. He helps us with his quality and capacity.

The incident seemed to affect both sets of players for the rest of the game, with little in the way of goalscoring opportunities.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came closest to a goal all night when his shot cannoned back off of the post a minute after the break, and from there on it was a backs-against-the-wall performance from the Portuguese side.

Unai Emery made plenty of changes from the side that drew with Liverpool on Saturday evening with Welbeck among those recalled as the England global replaced Alexandre Lacazette up front against the Portuguese giants tonight.

He added: "Our mind is to be first in the group. But we want tomorrow to give a big match with our personality". "We think [they are] serious injuries". In our game plan we know we had to be rigorous and they were nearly flawless on that.

"He's always talking to them and if it's not him then it's his assistants, the other coaches talking to me, showing me different clips, analysing my game, analysing opponents as well".
