What the U.S. midterms results mean: five key takeaways from election night

The Democratic victory in the U.S. House of Representatives could echo from Moscow to Beijing to Riyadh, with empowered Democrats now able to launch new investigations into President Donald Trump's global business empire and his political dealings with the rest of the world.

Going into the voting, Republicans were defending majorities of 121-82 in the House and 34-16 in the Senate.

When one questioner - Cordelia Lynch of Britain's Sky News - prefaced a question with the assertion that the results were "not an absolute victory" for Trump, he cut her off to insist that "I'll be honest: I thought it was a very-close-to-complete victory".

"I only had me".

The power split "has the potential to dramatically shift things for the Democratic senators with an eye on running for president in 2020", says Axios. In a remarkable scene, he called out defeated Republicans by name - "Too bad, Mike" at one moment, "Mia Love gave me no love and she lost" at another - and blamed them for not embracing his agenda.

Speaking at a wide-ranging White House press conference, Trump, by turns combative and conciliatory, said Democrats and Republicans should set aside partisanship to work together.

Get the Monitor Stories you care about delivered to your inbox. Let's stay away.' They did very poorly. "I'm not sure that I should be happy or sad, but I feel just fine about it". John Cornyn, R-Texas, talks with reporters on Capitol Hill, Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018 in Washington. "Angers me to my core".

The Democrats also took control of the House of Representatives. The president warned Democrats not to push too hard with their investigations, or he would smack back even harder; Pelosi vowed that they would conduct responsible oversight. This includes taking a stand against the unfair trade policies of other countries; adopting a tough stance on border policies; filling judicial posts with reactionaries, including two US Supreme Court justices; undoing environmental and other regulations; and attacking human rights. Last Friday, at a campaign rally in West Virginia, he contemplated the possible GOP loss of the House, and said he wasn't anxious, he'd "figure it out".

The high-stakes 2018 midterm elections in the U.S. delivered several significant firsts as millions came out in record numbers to elect the first two Muslim women to Congress, the youngest woman ever in Congress and the nation's first openly gay governor. Both parties concede a backlash against President Trump and his party was a factor - Minnesota is no stranger to midterm swings. His de facto firing of attorney general Jeff Sessions today may or may not reduce that threat.

For her part, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, who is likely to reclaim the speakership, has spoken of a reintroduction of checks and balances and not of pursuing impeachment.

"We're not going for the lowest common denominator, we're going for the boldest common denominator", she said at her own press conference.

"I suspect that if the GOP puts up a credible candidate she could easily be a one-term representative", Busch told the Washington Free Beacon.

Vanden Houten of Oxford Economics said she was not forecasting a recession by the time Trump faces reelection in 2020 but the odds were rising.

Trump offered an olive branch to House Democrats as an alternative to an investigative face-off.

"We [members of Congress] are the appropriators", Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine said ahead of the vote. As in Florida, the Republicans hold both Senate seats and the governor's job.

Trump had aggressively campaigned in the closing days of the race, his focus on boosting Republicans in states he carried in 2016. There are still a handful of races that haven't been decided, and the Democratic margin in the House is likely to grow. Joe Donnelly in Indiana, Republican Josh Hawley defeating Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine defeating Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor. Gains in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania were offset by mixed results in OH and GOP dominance in electoral powerhouse Florida.

Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said she is "confident in her support among members and members elect".

Here's a look at how exit polls work, the issues that appeared to matter most to voters in 2018, and how to interpret these findings. But the president received negative marks from voters on temperament and trustworthiness.

Polling experts have since worked to improve their methods and how they collect responses from voters for exit polls, Kennedy said. Along with federal prosecutors in New York, Mueller has already obtained guilty pleas and witness cooperation from Trump's former campaign chairman, deputy campaign chairman, White House national security adviser, and long-time personal lawyer. Losing Taylor's seat leaves Republicans with just a single state House member in the state's largest city - Rep. Martina White.
