Terrified patrons hurled barstools through windows to escape or threw their bodies protectively on top of friends as a Marine combat veteran killed 12 people at a country music bar in an attack that added Thousand Oaks to the tragic roster of American cities traumatized by mass shootings.

A sheriff's captain says eleven people were shot late Wednesday when a suspect opened fire in a crowded Southern California bar.

The gunman was found dead.

"It's a horrific scene", Sheriff Geoff Dean said yesterday. "He always locked himself in his room, he was always by himself", said Blake Winnett. The firearm had been outfitted with an extended magazine to hold more bullets than a typical handgun. The device is illegal in California.

"I looked over and he was shooting at people".

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since 17 students and teachers were killed at a Parkland, Florida, high school nine months ago.

The 23-year-old, who was a recent graduate of California Lutheran University, worked at the Borderline Bar and organized the college night event. When the gunfire erupted shortly after 11 p.m. local time Wednesday, it was packed with young people, including a group celebrating a birthday.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, said lawmakers would start crafting a gun-control bill when the House convenes with a Democratic majority in early January.

"Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the people that it happened to", defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said.

Tel was one of the 12 people killed in the Borderline Bar shooting.

Thousands of mourners lined US Highway 101 on Thursday morning to watch as a hearse carrying Helus' body traveled from a hospital in Thousand Oaks to the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

When the shooter reloaded his gun, Wennerstrom said he knew he had a moment to act. "It could have been much, much worse".

Dean told reporters that officers went to the home of the suspected shooter about six months ago. Those included a disturbance call to his home in April, when deputies found him acting irate and irrationally.

Long had no criminal record.

"Great bravery shown by police", President Donald Trump tweeted early Thursday.

.

"If you were a victim of a crime, you want him investigating the case", Buschow said.

Speaking after discovering his death, Mr Orfanus' mother issued a desperate plea for gun control. He wrote on Twitter, "We must find a way to stop the senseless and many times preventable killings that are robbing our country of innocent lives". Thousand Oaks was considered the third-safest city in the US this year, according to Niche, an online company that provides data on neighborhoods, companies and schools.

"I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in", Dean told reporters when asked if he was surprised this happened in Thousand Oaks.
