Lime Scooters recall a model worldwide

Over 1500 people queued at Mi store in Auckland for opening day

A Lime rider in San Francisco.

A spokeswoman for Lime said in a statement at the time the company was working with worldwide safety agencies following reports the Okai scooters could break apart while in use.

This is the second recall by the company after it pulled thousands of scooters weeks ago after learning that some of its vehicles' batteries could catch fire.

Lime told the Washington Post on Friday that it was "looking into reports that scooters manufactured by Okai"-the manufacturer Lime blames for this particular malfunction, which the Washington Post was unable tor reach-"may break and [is] working cooperatively with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the relevant authorities internationally to get to the bottom of this".

The vast majority of Lime's fleet was manufactured by other companies, and decommissioned Okai scooters would be replaced with newer, more advance scooters, he says.

China-based Okai didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Those who experience the breaking scooter are typically leaving them where they break, and it has been hard for the company to tally how many have broken, the Washington Post reports.

Lime co-founder and vice president of expansion Caen Contee, in Wellington this week for the Traffic Institute (Trafinz) annual conference, said talks with key stakeholders had been positive.

"Safety is Lime's highest priority and as a precaution we are immediately decommissioning all Okai scooters in the global fleet", the spokeswoman said. "We don't anticipate any real service disruptions".

I thought the batteries that were Lime's problem...

... Those scooters were made by a different manufacturer.

"A core part of allowing us to operate requires us to be conscientious and ultimately create the most safe programme to enable cities to feel like they're adopting something that is in its best interest".

And with scooter users starting to show up in emergency rooms, critics are also concerned about rider safety. In September, a 24-year-old Dallas man died after falling off a Lime scooter.

"If the licence is extended, we will likely further amend the code of practice to ensure that the scooters are benefiting Aucklanders and visitors and that any issues caused are addressed", he said.
