Wisconsin boys appears to give Nazi salute in photo; school district investigating

Wisconsin High School Class Give Nazi Salutes, White Power Sign in Prom Photo

"Which doesn't give a bunch of teenagers a lot of guidance on how to raise their hands", says Blue, who felt that numerous boys immediately began intentionally doing the Nazi salute.

"It needs to stop", said the boy, identifying himself as Jordan Blue.

"At the time I took the picture, there are all different stages of waving goodbye", he said. "My peers should not have raised it in this specific way that was the offensive way and hurtful way". And I'm pretty sure my classmates just interpreted as "raise your hand, let's do this as a joke"'.

But, as freelancer and Vice contributor Jules Suzdaltsev pointed out, there's at least one student who is doing the "white power" sign in the center of the photograph.

Baraboo parents also received a letter Monday morning from Mueller informing them of the photo's existence and of an impending investigation.

'We even got the black kid to throw it up #barabooproud, ' the caption on the photo read.

It's a photo that has been seen across the world.

The controversial pic quickly went viral over the weekend with an ironic use of the hashtag #BarabooPround, which is usually used by the district to promote its athletics program and school spirit.

'I am the boy captured in the photo to the far right.

"Did he say anything to make it clear that it was raise your hand in this way as in this Nazi symbol?"

The photos have since been removed, the photo agency wrote on its site in a message that blames "jerks" and online negativity. I knew what my morals were and it was not to salute something I firmly didn't believe in'.

The image - which shows boys from the 2019 Baraboo High School class before their junior prom - was first shared in an album on the website of WheelMemories, a photography business run by Peter Gust.

Due to malevolent behavior on the part of some in society; this page has been modified.

"It is too bad that there are those in society who can and do take the time to be jerks; knowingly and willingly to be jerks!" the post on the the company's website read.

'The destruction may not be physical but instead it can be bullying that is intellectual or emotional. "To anyone that was hurt I sincerely apologize".

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum condemned the photo. We need to explain what is the danger of hateful ideology rising, ' the tweet read.

"Auschwitz with its gas chambers was at the very end of the long process of normalising and accommodating hatred".

School District Superintendent Lori Mueller said on Monday the photo was not "reflective of the educational values and beliefs of the School District of Baraboo".

A photo showing more than 60 male students from Baraboo High School seemingly giving the so-called "Hitler greeting" on the steps of the Sauk County Courthouse before their prom last spring, has stoked controversy after it was posted on social media on Sunday.

Kevin Vodak, the school board's president, said, as a private citizen, that he was "deeply disappointed" and "appalled" by the photo.

The district told parents in a letter that school officials "are extremely troubled by the image", the station added. "The District will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address".
