Doctors On Gun Violence: "This Is Our Lane"

Doctors have been tweeting about their experiences treating victims of gun violence after the NRA mocked a position paper by the American College of Physicians. Above the NRA logo in 2017 at an outdoor sports trade show in Harrisburg Penn

The NRA was criticizing a new paper from the American College of Physicians, which outlined the organization's public health approach for reducing deaths and injuries from guns. The toughest part comes afterward, Haughey said. They show how the stunned public responses to the October 27 carnage in a Pittsburgh synagogue and then the November 7 shooting in a Thousand Oaks country music bar fail to reflect the everyday routine of trying to resuscitate victims in emergency rooms in Baltimore and beyond.

Dr. Kristin Gee, tweeted: "To the @NRA, this is what it looks like to stay in #mylane".

"I would like to graciously extend the invitation to the author of this tweet and anyone else from the NRA to join me at the hospital the next time I care for a child who has been hurt or killed by a gun that wasn't safely stored or was an innocent bystander", tweeted Jeannie Moorjani, a pediatric doctor in Orlando. "Most upsetting, however, the medical community seems to have consulted NO ONE but themselves", the NRA tweeted.

Along with it the organisation wrote: "Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane". That measure, which still exists, came three years after a landmark CDC study undercut a key NRA mantra with its finding: A gun in a home does not make everyone safer. We will not be silent about the toll of #gunviolence. "Where the evidence is limited, we said so", he wrote. Stopping gun violence is inarguably in doctors' lanes, and as their responses clearly show, they're not going to stand down.

Using the hashtag #ThisIsOurLane, doctors from all over the country posted photos of bloody hospital scrubs and operating rooms, showing the gruesome consequences of the NRA's refusal to back even broadly popular gun control reforms like universal background checks. "Dr. Robert Young, a NY psychiatrist who is the editor of the website for the group Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership, said the NRA's characterisation of 'anti-gun doctors" is correct. This is my crime scene. My ex shot me because I left him. A surgeon put my hand back together.

Which makes the NRA's criticism about physicians not having adequate research particularly frustrating to doctors like Melinek.

They have taken a debate that has churned for decades among powerful political gun lobbies and in academic journals and relaunched it in the unfiltered Twittersphere. 'You have to be an experienced firearms owner and have some training to know about gun safety.

"After treating countless patients with life altering spinal cord injuries and brain injuries secondary to gun shot wounds, I would have to say this is my lane", @DanaBussing wrote.

And there won't be an end to it until doctors are satisfied, said Bob Doherty, an official with the American College of Physicians. "Doctors will keep speaking out".

In an interview, Sidwell said the divisiveness made it hard to find the common ground necessary for improving gun safety.
