Pakistan respects Aasia Bibi’s legal rights, Qureshi tells Canadian counterpart

Justin Trudeau has said Canada is a welcoming place

Pakistan's information minister, Fawad Chaudry, said pictures which claim to show Mrs Bibi meeting Pope Francis are actually of her daughter, and date from two years ago.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says talks are underway about the future of a Pakistani woman who was recently released from death row, emphasizing that "Canada is a welcoming country".

"We are in discussions with the Pakistani government", Trudeau said in an interview with Agence France Presse in Paris, where he attended a ceremony marking the end of World War One.

The TLP is also the driving force behind protests about the high court decision to free Pakistan Christian Asia Bibi after she spent eight years in jail on blasphemy charges.

Cameron Ahmad said the government recognizes the delicate domestic context and won't comment further on the case, but he noted Canada is a welcoming country.

Her husband has said the family is in danger and has pleaded for asylum from the UK, US or Canada.

In a tweet shared on Tuesday, FM Qureshi said that he had asked the Pakistani Consul General in Houston to seek regular consular visits and to "ensure Dr [Aafia] Siddiqui's well being in line with her legal and human rights". The government has indicated it would bar her from travelling overseas.

Bibi was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 after neighbors said she made derogatory remarks about Islam when they objected to her drinking water from their glass because she was not Muslim.

Her lawyer, Saif ul-Malook, who has fled to the Netherlands following violent protests in Pakistan, told the BBC on Tuesday that she was yet to be offered a visa to any Western country, which remained the only impediment to her ability to leave Pakistan safely.

On Tuesday, the ultra-Islamist Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) party that led the protests said it strictly opposed her release and any permission for her to go overseas.

The militant Tehrik-e-Labaik (TLP) party took to the streets after her acquittal and blocked main cities and highways for three days.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper, which also quoted Mr. Johnson's letter to the Home Secretary, reported earlier this week that Britain had not offered asylum to Ms. Bibi and her family because of fears it would prompt "unrest" in the United Kingdom and attacks on British Embassies.
